Provides access control and security, call processing, virtual circuit building, and network status information. LDA === Load Accumulator. A machine code instruction. Similar to mnemonic. LDEM ==== Leave Deferred-Echo Mode. An ISIS Dispatcher message indicating a change of state from Deferred-Echo Mode (destination) to local echo mode (origination). Contrast with Enter Deferred-Echo Mode. LDM === Limited Distance Modem. A repeater or wave amplifier. leased line =========== A type of communications link with a permanent path for exclusive use by the lessee. least-cost path =============== The route between two network communications devices that uses network resources most efficiently. Leave Deferred-Echo Mode (LDEM) =============================== An ISIS Dispatcher message indicating a change of state from Deferred-Echo Mode (destination) to local echo mode (origination). Contrast with Enter Deferred-Echo Mode. LEM === Local Engine Monitor. A PC-based application used in a Small-scale Distributed Network (SDN) to monitor and control the network, load and dump Engines, and validate users. Leprechaun logic (LEP) ====================== A Node Code routine that handles Supervisory communication. LF == Line feed. LHN === Long-Haul Network. A large geographical area communications network. license ======= The approval to execute restricted commands. LIFO ==== Last-In, First-Out. A method of accessing a data stack in which the last item written is the first item read. Limited Distance Modem (LDM) ============================ A repeater or wave amplifier. line ==== A physical connection. A communications cable or waveguide that connects data processing equipment. line conditioning ================= The improved quality and speed of data transmission on private, leased communications lines. line control ============ The collection of operating procedures and control signals that control a data transmission system. line editor =========== A program capable of revising another program or data (in a file) one line at a time. See editor. line loading ============ The total amount of transmission traffic carried by a line; usually expressed as a percentage of the total theoretical capacity of that line. line outage =========== A failure of a communications circuit due to faulty telephone branch office exchange equipment, storms, loss of carrier signals, or other events that could cause an open or short circuit. line protocol ============= A set of rules governing data transmission over network lines. Consists of both handshaking and line control functions between transmit and receive locations. link ==== A logical connection between two nodes. linked list =========== A data structure in which each data record has a pointer to the next logical data record in the list. load ==== The transfer of data into main memory from an auxiliary storage device, such as a disk. Also, the amount of traffic or activity at a given time on a node, line, network, or Engine. Load Accumulator (LDA) ====================== A machine code instruction. Similar to a mnemonic. load sharing ============ The distribution of a given load among several computers on a network. LOAD-II ======= A BT North America program used to load code to and dump code from nodes and slots. Local Area Network (LAN) ======================== A geographically localized network consisting of both hardware and software. LANs link personal computers, workstations, printers, file servers, and other peripherals. Devices on a LAN typically transmit data between offices in the same building or between buildings located near each other. See token-ring, ethernet, AppleTalk, LocalTalk, Virtual Networking Systems (VINES), and Xerox Network Systems (XNS). Local Control Program (LCP) =========================== Provides access control and security, call processing, virtual circuit building, and network status information. Local Engine Monitor (LEM) ========================== A PC-based application used in a Small-scale Distributed Network (SDN) to monitor and control the network, load and dump Engines, and validate users. local loop ========== That part of a communications circuit between the subscriber's equipment and the equipment in the local central office. local partitioned ================= Sections of memory that run software programs managed by ISIS. local system disk ================= The hard-disk drive included in each Turbo Engine cabinet (one disk drive per chassis). Communication with the disk drive is through the Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) and the File Server (FS) board in each chassis (one FS board per disk drive). Local User Directory (LUD) ========================== A directory (resident on a host) of all valid users of that host. LocalTalk ========= Apple Computer proprietary low-end network solution (OSI Physical level). LocalTalk connects the network port and a LaserWriter. Rated at 0.2304 Mbps. See AppleTalk. See also Local Area Network. LOG-I ===== Login Session-I. Login message format used prior to development of LOG-II. LOG-II ====== Login Session-II. Login message format following the CCITT X.409 protocol. logger ====== The Turbo-SCP service that sends log messages to a file stored on the local system disk. logic boards ============ PC boards that govern the operations performed on the data; usually eac step influences the next. Two examples are the Turbo Engine File Server (FS) board and the Engine CPU board. logical channel =============== The channel number of a virtual circuit relative to a specific link. logical record ============== That portion of a packet containing data from a single user. Logical Unit (LU) ================= A logical assignment that allows a slot to address an I/O device. The logical unit is mapped from a slot to a physical port; this mapping is managed by the ISIS Kernel. login ===== The process whereby a user gains access to a computer or network. Login Session-I (LOG-I) ======================= Login message format used prior to development of LOG-II. Login Session-II (LOG-II) ========================= Login message format following the CCITT X.409 protocol. login string ============ A means of gaining access to the network. The string consists of three fields: username, destination, and password. The destination and password are optional depending on username configuration. logout ====== The process whereby a user exits a computer or network. Long-Haul Network (LHN) ======================= A large geographical area communications network. Longitudinal Redundancy Check (LRC) =================================== A system of parity checking for transmission errors. Data, transmitted in block form, has a block-check or LRC character following the block. This character is developed by forming a parity check on all bits in the same bit position in the block. longword ======== A sequence of 32 bits (4 bytes), based on a 16-bit word (which is treated as a unit and stored in one register). Associated with Motorola devices used on Turbo Engine logic boards. See word. loop-back ========= The method of returning signals by special switching to a test device or center so that the characteristic and operational status of a circuit can be evaluated. low-speed lines =============== AT&T designation for lines used to transmit data at rates up to 150 bps (Series 1000). LRC === Longitudinal Redundancy Check. A system of parity checking for transmission errors. Data, transmitted in block form, has a block-check or LRC character following the block. This character is developed by forming a parity check on all bits in the same bit position in the block. LRS === Last Record Sent. LSE === Local Systems Environment. LSI === Large Scale Integration. LSU === Loader Storage Unit. LU == Logical Unit. A logical assignment that allows a slot to address an I/O device. The logical unit is mapped from a slot to a physical port; this mapping is managed by the ISIS Kernel. LUD === Local User Directory.
