NAD-68K ======= A UNIX version of NAD that translates Engine assembler source code to Motorola 68020 object code, which is loaded and executed in the Turbo Engine. NAK, NACK ========= Negative Acknowledgment. A condition indicating that the previous transmission block was in error and that the receiver is ready to accept a retransmission of the erroneous block. Also, it can mean not ready to multipoint (station selection) or line bid (initialization sequence) in point-to-point operation. nano ==== In the metric system, a prefix meaning one billionth (1/1,000,000,000). native code =========== A program written in the language of the computer that will execute the program. NCH === Network Component Hierarchy. In CMF, a representation of a network's logical structure in which network components (partitions, clusters, processors, and slots) are stored in hierarchical relationship to each other. NCP === Network Control Program. Manages the allocation, use, and diagnostics of performance of all lines (in the network) and of the availability of the terminals at the ends of the network. Also refers to one component of Systems Network Architecture (SNA). NCS === National Communications System. Needle ====== The Supervisor-to-Node Code message containing the appropriate (external) circuit path information (origination/destination node, host, and port numbers, and codes indicating the circuit type and speed). Each node builds its part of the circuit based on the information in the Needle as it threads its way through the network carrying the data. There are two types of Needles: TYM2 (originates at the Supervisor to build the network circuit) and ISIS (builds intra-ISIS circuit from Node Code to the destination slot). Negative Acknowledgment (NAK or NACK) ===================================== A condition indicating that the previous transmission block was in erro and that the receiver is ready to accept a retransmission of the erroneous block. Also, it can mean not ready to a multipoint (station selection) or line bid (initialization sequence) in point-to-point operation. neighbor node ============= A node to which another node is connected. The two nodes are "neighbors." NEM === Network Event Monitor. A program residing in an ISIS slot, which, in conjunction with TMCS, builds a circuit to the Supervisor ERLOG slave program to collect the Error and Event messages stored on the Supervisor disk. Net Message =========== A BT North America product that displays informational or instructional messages on a user's terminal when the user's host is nonfunctional. This facility allows the end user immediate access to host status information. Netport ======= A program that acts as a slave to the network-resident ELF program under CMF (UNIX) environments. Under the direction of ELF, Netport retrieves and formats image files for transportation to ELF. NETVAL ====== Network Validations. A program used to validate TYMNET network users and to determine what level of access a user has within the network. NETVAL runs in an ISIS slot. NetWare ======= LAN software developed by Novell. Used for microcomputers, NetWare enhances the token ring performance of a system. Different versions of NetWare can accommodate star, string of stars, Token ring, and bus hardware configurations. See Local Area Network. network ======= Any system designed to provide one or more access paths for communications between users at different geographic locations. Also, a series of points connected by communications channels. Network Component Hierarchy (NCH) ================================= In CMF, a representation of a network's logical structure in which network components (partitions, clusters, processors, and slots) are stored in hierarchical relationship to each other. Network Console (NTCN) ====================== A program (now a part of TMCS) that saves the history for a user who changes the configuration parameters for an X.25/X.75 slot, using the X.25/X.75 Operations Manager (XOM). The user interface is commands in the form of words rather than hexadecimal code. Also used in the event an X.25/X.75 slot has to be reloaded. Network Control Program (NCP) ============================= Manages the allocation, use, and diagnostics of performance of all lines (in the network) and of the availability of the terminals at the ends of the network. Also refers to one component of Systems Network Architecture (SNA). Network Event Monitor (NEM) =========================== A program residing in an ISIS slot, which, in conjunction with TMCS, builds a circuit to the Supervisor ERLOG slave program and Network Console to collect the Error and Event messages stored on the Supervisor disk. Network Job Entry (NJE) ======================= The process of submitting a job to a remote system for execution. Network level ============= Level 3 of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. The Network level switches and routes information, establishes a logical association of remote hosts and provides indication of a remote connection. network mode ============ A class of CMF commands used to maintain the Network Component Hierarchy (NCH) system generation files and to generate code. network platform ================ Off-the-shelf equipment that serves as a basic building block whereby future enhancements can be added to a network. Network Position Table (NPT) ============================ A table that displays a user's current position path within a Network Component Hierarchy (NCH). Includes network name, partition name, cluster name (including node and Kernel host number), processor name, and slot name. Network Services Manager (NSM) ============================== A BT North America integrated software product that provides a single, user-friendly interface to the various TYMNET services. With a single login, a user can be automatically connected to management resources previously available only through multiple manual logins. For example, a customized list of services available through an NSM menu might include TymValidate, X.25/X.75 Operations Manager (XOM), TYMCOM Operations Manager (TOM), Net Message, and the Information Service. Network Terminal Number (NTN) ============================= A 10-digit number used to identify a destination call. This number is required for international calls (per CCITT, X.25 protocol). Similar to a telephone number. network topology ================ The mapping of the connection of nodes in a network. Network User Identification (NUI) ================================= An identification code (alphanumeric) that is universally used by network customers, which authorizes them access to dial-up services in a public or shared network. The NUI is obtained from the local Telecommunication Administration (TA) operating the network in each country. Network Validations (NETVAL) ============================ A program used to validate TYMNET network users and to determine what level of access a user has within the network. NETVAL runs in an ISIS slot. NFMI ==== Next Fill Message Index. NIB === NAD Image Binary.
